Video case series highlights breadth of movement disorders in Pan America

Between April and June 2024, the MDS- Pan-American Section (PAS) Affiliate & National Society Video Case Discussion Series was a learning opportunity to advance understanding and promote cooperation among movement disorder specialists in the region. The course director, Dr. Mayela Rodríguez-Violante, oversaw the series with the goal of improving participants' recognition and diagnosis of a wide variety of movement disorders. By the end of the series, participants improved their diagnostic techniques by examining real-world cases, presented by junior specialists, and gained a broader understanding of both typical and atypical movement disorders.

Each session, lasting approximately two hours, featured video case presentations on specific topics contributed by different national and affiliate societies within the MDS-PAS. Senior faculty members from various countries served as lead discussants, guiding participants through the complexities of each case and highlighting regional specificities and universal principles in the management of movement disorders.

Hypokinetic disorders, including Parkinson's disease and related conditions, were the primary focus of the initial session. Dr. Emilia Gatto and Dr. Erick González Delgado served as the experts who conducted the case presentations, while the Argentine Neurological Society and the Bolivian Society of Neurology were invited as affiliate societies. The interactive polling and panel discussion that followed were conducted by Dr. Laura Silveira-Moriyama and Dr. Hyder Jinnah. The intricacy of identifying and managing hypokinetic disorders was illustrated in this session, which emphasized the importance of collaborative discussions in the advancement of treatment strategies.

The second session addressed hyperkinetic diseases, including conditions such as Huntington's disease, dystonia, and other involuntary movement disorders. The Canadian Movement Disorders Society and the Movement Disorders Study Group of the Mexican Academy of Neurology, respectively, presented cases headed by experts Dr. Daniel Martinez-Ramirez and Dr. Andres Deik, with Dr. Adolfo Ramirez-Zamora and Dr. Camila Aquino facilitating a productive discussion. The session underscored the challenges associated with diagnosing and treating hyperkinetic disorders.

The concluding session concentrated on autoimmune-related and functional movement disorders, which are increasingly acknowledged for their complex nature and influence on patient care. With 141 unique viewers and 92 concurrent viewers, this session achieved the highest level of engagement. Active debates were facilitated by Dr. Orlando Barsottini and Dr. Veronica Bruno during the case presentations of members of the Colombian Neurological Society and the Mexican Society for the Study of Movement Disorders. The importance of multidisciplinary approaches in managing these disorders was underscored during the session, as they frequently necessitate both neurological and psychiatric expertise.

Throughout the series, each society was allocated 45 minutes to present their cases, followed by a 15-minute question-and-answer session. The series was structured to encourage interaction, with a polling feature enabling real-time feedback and discussion, thus fostering a collaborative learning environment.

The MDS-PAS Video Case Discussion Series was supported by a dedicated team, including Allie Stoffel and Kate Rudolph, who provided essential secretarial assistance. In conclusion, the MDS-PAS Video Case Discussion Series successfully met its objectives of enhancing knowledge and fostering collaboration among movement disorder specialists across the Pan-American Section. This effort to advance the understanding and cooperation among movement disorder specialists and their societies and associations in the region will be continued in future iterations of the MDS-PAS Video Case Discussion Series.
